It is Finished…(and Christmas Show Update)

November 30th, 2006 by Rob Osborn

Tonight’s Christmas show went really well. Steve and Jeff seemed like they’ve finally hit their stride and are getting comfortable with the material. I didn’t miss any guitar solos.

I finally finished the CD today.  As an artist i’m less than satisfied with the outcome, but i hope people will like it anyway. Like any art, it carries a part of it’s creator with it…and since i’m so much less than perfect it’s only fitting that my art is as well, i guess. Still, i’d hoped for a bit better.

I guess that wasn’t exactly the best sales pitch huh? “Hey! Buy my CD! It sucks and i hate it, but you’re sure to love it!!” This is why i’m not a professional musician.

In case anyone didn’t hear the news, Scrubs premiered tonight. Which should make Thursday night on NBC the best comedy lineup of all time. My Name is Earl, the Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock (which is a much better show than i thought it would be considering Alec Baldwin is a costar). It’s a lineup almost good enough to get me watching TV in real time–commercials and all.

Alright, i guess i’m going to sign off for now. Thanks in advance to anyone out there who will be coming to tomorrow night’s show. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. See you there!

News and Updates

November 30th, 2006 by Rob Osborn

It’s 11:49pm. I’ve finally got a chance to sit down and write a bit. I got home from tonight’s 34west show a few minutes ago. Today has been a long day.

After working on the final mixes and the mastering for my new CD “Opened Letters” all night, i finally got to bed at 6:30 this morning. Elizabeth woke me up at 9:30 and we piled in the car with my tools and Verity and we headed to Akron, where i had a job lined up (i don’t usually drive to Akron, but was doing a favor for one of my better customers). We arrived in Akron only to find out that the doorpanel i was supposed to fix had been replaced with a new one, and they didn’t need my services. To their credit, they had tried to call me this morning, but my phone was down in my studio and hadn’t shown that i’d missed any calls. I was glad that Elizabeth and Verity had decided to ride along with me. It made the trip a much better one.

Once we got home i went back down to the studio and tried to fix a couple of things on the album so that i could print a few copies to sell at tonights show. But the computer was giving me problems and i wasn’t able to finish in time.

Tonight’s show went really well. Because of the low ceilings and the placement of the lights at this venue, Steve and Jeff asked if i’d be willing to wear makeup during the show. I was, and so had my first experience applying and removing foundation and eyeliner. Yes, Kimmy, you may begin to mock me now.

Aside from my nervousness about learning to apply makeup, the show went pretty well tonight. Musically the first half was great. After intermission however, i missed an important guitar solo completely–because i was watching the character singing and watching the crowd’s reaction. It flustered me a bit, and i’m sure my face turned red. But no one could tell because i was wearing makup. *grin* It was a good reminder to keep my mind on the music i’m playing and not so much on what’s going on around us. We play two more shows this week, and then four shows each of the next two weeks.

The new CD is almost finished. I’ve learned a lot of things in the process of making it. I’ve learned that i don’t know nearly as much about recording CDs as i thought i did. I’ve learned that even the smallest task can take hours and that when it’s accomplished the result isn’t always what you want it to be. And i’ve learned that I will probably never be satisfied with any CD that i attempt to create on my own. I hope people like the songs in spite of the less than perfect recordings. I consider myself a lyricist first and foremost, and with the lyrics i am completly happy. The songs say exactly what i want them to say.

I’d planned on heading back to the studio tonight, but i’m going to head to bed instead. After being sick all of last week i guess i can’t really risk letting my immune system get too tired. ‘Night all.
